Atelier Vaporiste Box Van

As ModelEarth will be acting as agents for Pascal’s new box van kit I will be building a couple for myself.

As intended this builds into a four wheel van, of course I had to try something a little different!

I have had a couple of pairs of Aster arch bar bogies from a logging car they offered many years ago. I had fitted tophat bearings and Slater’s 16″ wheelsets, and they have been waiting for a good home for longer than I would care to admit to.

I wonder whether I should look at offering something similar in brass? I would like to do a couple more box vans like this a well as a Gilpin caboose, and I am going to need some more bogies from somewhere

The Chassis , as supplied will need only very slight modification to add bolsters, I think the end result, has a nice balance and proportion.

Skip Competition

The skip competition that we have been running closed last Saturday, following the Exeter show.

My thanks to all of those who entered, after much deliberation I declare James Gilchrist’s entry the winner.

I will be liaising with him to come up with a suitable figure as his prize, in the mean time here are some images of his entry.

Two Locos

Guys

I have recently had two very different locos on the workbench.

Idwal is a 7/8ths Jack project loco. The client had had this built for him, it required a few corrections, followed by detailing and painting.

This build uses Roundhouse Billy mech with a Lady Ann boiler, it is fitted with a Slo-Mo, a DJB reverser and a Summerland’s Chuffer. I am not sure of the source of the works and nameplates as they were supplied with it.

The smokebox is finished with Hammerite barbecue paint, the rest of the bodywork is Humbrol Enamels over etch primer. Once set up it had the usual dry brushing and oil wash treatment. The castings were cleaned up and the pipe work silver soldered into sub assemblies, chemical blackener and a polish back with a worn nylon scouring pad produces the effect that you see.

The centre cab is a project for myself, built over a re-wheeled Aristocraft Long Block that I have had for about 20 years.

The construction is a mix of ModelEarth resin bonnets and styrene sheet, with a good handful of Talisman brass.

I am taking the opportunity to master up additional items for the range of detail parts that we offer, you can see sandboxes, axle boxes and brake last here, I still have the rest of the cab controls and a set of air horns to finish off.
